RenderMyJewels vs Blender for jewelry rendering

Blender is a free, open-source 3D suite with two built-in renderers, Cycles and Eevee. Many jewelers try it before paying for anything. Here is how it compares with RenderMyJewels for everyday jewelry images.

The short answer

Blender can produce outstanding jewelry renders and costs nothing, but you build everything yourself, from gem materials to lighting and camera moves. RenderMyJewels charges for its Premium plan but gives jewelers ready-made materials, lighting, poses, exports and AI tools in a browser.

Where Blender is the better choice

  • Free and open source. No subscription and no licence fees.
  • Unlimited flexibility. Modelling, sculpting, rendering, animation and compositing in one tool.
  • Cycles path tracing. Physically based materials and lighting, and recent versions support dispersion in glass materials.
  • A huge community. Tutorials, add-ons and asset libraries for almost everything.
  • Full animation and video editing, for product films that go beyond turntables.

Where RenderMyJewels is the stronger fit

  • Time. No material building, light rigging or render settings. Upload a file and start from 98 metal presets, 58 gem presets, 28 backgrounds, 10 ground styles and 40 one-click poses.
  • Jewelry-ready gems. Gem presets come with refraction and dispersion already set for each stone type.
  • Rhino files. 3DM uploads work directly. Blender needs a community add-on or an export to another format.
  • AI photoshoots and AI video. On-model photos, product scenes and short motion clips from a render, with no extra tools.
  • Share links. Send a customer an interactive 3D viewer of a design.
  • Team members without 3D skills can produce consistent images.

The hidden cost of free

Blender's price is zero, but learning to render jewelry well takes many hours, and every new collection needs setup and render time. For a business, that time has a cost. If you already have Blender skills, it can be the most flexible option. If you do not, a jewelry-specific studio usually gets you to sellable images faster. Our photography cost calculator can help you compare the cost of images in your own situation.

Using both

Some designers prepare or clean up files in Blender and render their catalogues in RenderMyJewels. Blender exports GLB, OBJ, FBX and STL, which all upload directly. If you do, check units and normals on export, our glossary pages on normals and glTF cover the common pitfalls.

What a Blender jewelry setup involves

To get catalogue-ready jewelry from Blender, a typical setup includes:

  1. Importing the model, fixing units, scale and normals, and separating stones from metal.
  2. Building metal materials with the right colour, metalness and roughness for each alloy.
  3. Building gem materials with the right IOR, dispersion and absorption, often with shader nodes.
  4. Choosing or buying studio HDRIs, adding reflector planes and balancing exposure.
  5. Setting up cameras for each angle, a ground plane and a contact shadow.
  6. Tuning sampling and denoising so pavé is clean without being blurred.
  7. Rendering each still, then setting up and rendering a turntable animation for video.

Once built, a good setup can be reused, but each new design and colour variant still needs time. In RenderMyJewels, steps 2 to 7 are covered by presets and exports.

Quality

Both can look photoreal. In Blender, quality depends on the time and skill you invest in materials, lighting and sampling. In RenderMyJewels, quality comes from tuned presets, so results are consistent across a catalogue from the first day.

Which should you choose

Choose Blender if you want complete creative freedom at no software cost and you, or someone on your team, has the time to master it. Choose RenderMyJewels if you want consistent product images, 360° videos and AI content quickly, without building a pipeline. The Free plan includes unlimited uploads, so you can compare with your own models.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blender good enough for jewelry rendering?
Yes. With Cycles and well built gem materials, Blender produces excellent jewelry renders. The trade-off is the time it takes to learn and to set up each scene.
Can I import Rhino files into Blender?
Not natively. A community add-on can read 3DM files, or you can export GLB, OBJ or FBX from Rhino.
Can I upload a Blender scene to RenderMyJewels?
Export your model from Blender as GLB, glTF, OBJ, FBX or STL and upload that. Blend files are not supported.
Is RenderMyJewels free?
There is a Free plan with unlimited uploads and 3 AI images a month. Premium costs $49 a month or $490 a year.
