glTF and GLB files
An open 3D file format from the Khronos Group designed for efficient delivery of scenes and models, with GLB as its binary version.
.gltf and .glb
- .gltf is a JSON text file. It can reference separate .bin files for geometry and image files for textures, or embed them inside the text.
- .glb is the binary version that packs everything into one file.
For uploading anywhere, GLB is the safer choice because nothing can go missing.
What glTF stores
Meshes, PBR materials using metalness and roughness, textures, a node hierarchy with names, cameras, animations and more. Mesh names survive export, which matters for jewelry because names tell the studio which parts are stones.
Uploading glTF to RenderMyJewels
GLB files upload as they are. A .gltf file works when everything is embedded inside it, and the platform repacks it to GLB for the studio. A .gltf that points to separate .bin or texture files cannot be read from a single upload, so export GLB from your software instead.
Exporting good GLB files
- Check units. glTF uses metres, so let the exporter convert from millimetres instead of scaling by hand.
- Name stone meshes clearly, for example Diamond, Gem or Halo, so they are detected as stones.
- Keep metal and stones as separate meshes.
- Check the polygon count before exporting.
Rhino, Blender, 3ds Max and many other tools export GLB directly or with free plugins. See all supported file formats.
